Danita Weatherstone

Danita Weatherstone is an Australian Lyric Soprano. She is regarded as a rising star of Australian Opera and is a principal artist with the National Opera Company; Opera Australia. Critics have described her as “having a pure blossoming tone that exudes emotion”…“When she sings, she really knocks it out of the harbour”…“One final velvety note by Danita Weatherstone lingers in a way that induces aural goosebumps.”

As the winner of the “Mozarteum Award” from the Australian Singing competition, Danita completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Opera and Music Theatre at the Salzburg Mozarteum University. During this time in Austria, Danita also undertook coaching at the Wiener Staatsoper.

From a nationwide selection, Danita was asked to be member of Opera Australia’s Moffat Young Artist Program. For Opera Australia, Danita has performed at the Sydney Opera House the roles of Mimì in La Bohème, Micaëla in Carmen, Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro and Annina in La Traviata.

For Opera Australia she has also performed in their touring productions, such as the role of The Young Woman in Ghost Sonata (Melbourne & Sydney) and starred in two National Tours in the title role of Madame

Butterfly and Micaela in Carmen. Her cover work for the Sydney Opera House includes Pamina in The Magic Flute, Liù in Turandot, Micaëla in Carmen, Mimì in La Bohème, and Valencienne in The Merry Widow.

The concert platform has seen Danita perform in The Great Opera Hits 2019-2023 concert series at the Sydney Opera House, promotional and fundraiser performances for Opera Australia across the country, guest performances at Frohnburg Castle and Salzburg Residence Palace Ball, scenes from Cosi fan tutti as Fiordiligi with the Mozart Opera Institute, recitals with Sydney Conservatorium Opera Ensemble and Carols at the Central Coast Stadium. Danita has also appeared in Cleopatra for Opera Projects Sydney and made a live recording of Songs for Judith Wright for Sydney ABC radio.

Most recently Danita was awarded the prestigious Dame Joan Sutherland Award by the Australian Opera Awards Committee and was awarded the Johnson Bequest for career development in Europe. In 2023 she was one of the 5 finalists in the Sydney Eisteddfod, adjudicated by international soprano Jessica Pratt. Danita has also won the Deutsche Oper Berlin Award and was offered a year placement with the company through The Opera Foundation for Young Australians.

Danita will be touring the role of Mimì in La Bohème for Opera Australia’s National 2024 Tour.
